There is no magic to the workings of hot air balloons. With the application of science the balloons can be made to both rise and fall. By heating the air that is contained within the balloon the basket with its passengers will be lifted skyward. The principal controlling this lift is that warm air is much less dense than cool air. One thing to remember is that the more weight that is being lifted the more hot air it will require. The actual balloon section is known as the envelope. It is this part that will catch the heated air and help the basket to rise. The heating of the air for this purpose is accomplished through the use of a device known as a burner. Using propane gas, the pilot will fire the burner at regular intervals in order to keep the balloon stable throughout the flight.
